ระบบวิธีคิดของมนุษย์ในสังคมหนึ่งๆ เป็นส่วนสำคัญที่จะแปรไปเป็นค่านิยม วัฒนธรรมประเพณี และกฎหมายของสังคมนั้นๆ ทั้งหมดนี้มีพื้นฐานมาจากความเชื่อดั้งเดิม และศาสนาที่เข้ามาภายหลัง ดังนั้นการที่จะเข้าใจสังคมหนึ่งๆ ก็จำเป็นต้องเข้าใจความเชื่อหลักของผู้คนในสังคมนั้น

"ทวาทศมาส" เป็นสารคดีที่ใช้โครงสร้างของเวลาและฤดูกาลในรอบหนึ่งปี เพื่อเรียบเรียงพิธีกรรมตามความเชื่อที่สำคัญตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน จากวัฒนธรรมผี มาสู่พราหมณ์และพุทธ และการอยู่ร่วมกันของทั้งสามความเชื่อหลัก ที่กลายมาเป็นวิธีคิดของสังคมไทยในปัจจุบัน

Stand as the only independent country in the heart of Southeast Asia through Western colonial age and one of few democratic countries in region's communist era, Thailand (Siam) seems to well preserve those ancient beliefs of its indigenous people and many ethnic groups that emigrated from neighboring countries during wartimes. But as Thailand keeps going along with modernity and scientific developments in globalization era, it's inevitable that those beliefs are now in state of decline. Either they are likely to disappear or turn into superficial touristic attractions.

Since customs, etiquettes and laws are basically derived from beliefs and religions of people in society. "Thawathosamat" is a documentary that captures the evolution of these beliefs and reexamines their transformations. It applies seasons in twelve months (meaning of film title) as its structure to show how people of Thailand shifted from animism to Hinduism and Buddhism. And how these beliefs mixed together and became conception of the nation.

Director's Note

As a secularist I've always interested in beliefs and religions as social phenomena. Nothing is mysterious or supernatural. They are one of basic knowledge to understand any society and how different one society is from others. But as we're turning into modernity, many of those things seem to be untraceable. Most of Thai people now confuse ancient ancestor's spirits and communal animism with individualized ghosts and modern superstitions. So I made "Thawathosamat" as an anthropological documentary that rarely happens in Thailand.
